Happy New Year everyone as we officially open the Ice Bowl 2010 season with three events, with only one of them being played in snow, according to this map that shows the snow cover in the USA. However, it's going to be cold, even in South Carolina today.
If the weather during the last week of December is any kind of harbinger of what it's going to be like for January, and even February, then this could be one of the frostiest Ice Bowls in recent memories. This means there are going to be lots of potential wimps who awake Ice Bowl morning and ponder, "Extra sleep in a warm bed" or "Do the right thing...play Ice Bowl." Of course, I'm remain confident there will once again be a large contingent of players who will support their local Ice Bowls again this year.
We're very interested in getting good photos that show some of the nasty weather we may be enduring this season. Please filter your photos (preferably high resolution) through your Ice Bowl TD, or send them directly to

Although I created Ice Bowl in 1987, it wasn't until 1996 that charity became a major part of the event. Our primary mission has always been to help combat hunger, but through the years some Ice Bowls have adopted other causes as well. While we still encourage all Ice Bowls to help fight hunger, we realize that adopting a local charity that helps integrate the disc golf community within the community at large is a key part of what Ice Bowl is about, and thus you'll notice a variety of good causes when you check out the Ice Bowl Schedule. Below are a few sites you can visit and help make the world a better place.
http://freerice.com Here you can improve your vocabulary while helping feed the hungry.
http://www.thehungersite.com Just click daily and sponsors pay for cups of food. Shop here and you help out even more.
http://www.wfp.org/ This site from the United Nations Fighting World Hunger Program - Fighting Hunger World Wide presents both the scope of the hunger problem and offers some solutions for helping.
We will be updating the file that shows the list of 2009 Ice Bowl soon, but I'm happy to report that we have grown to 199 events reporting making the 2009 totals over $233,000 and 56,500 pounds of food. The collective goal for ice Bowl 2010 is $250K.
Stay warm everyone,
Rick Rothstein - Instigator, Ice Bowl 2010 |
